Thesis Question

"The sixth sense: how can Psycho-Geography enrich the tourist experience?"

Chris is investigating the cultural issue of the tourist in the city. In the modern tourist culture the tourist has rejected their senses becoming bias towards sight and the camera. The camera with its unlimited storage capacity along with a fast moving urban culture has lead to a belief that a multitude of photographs will inevitably capture the sense of place. Exploration through Psycho-Geography and its principles of horizontal city walking combined with vertical reading of history is a key aspect in understanding this cultural issue. Consideration will also be taken into our association with the senses and the ideas of a sixth sense, a culmination of all our senses and experiences.

How the Experience Station would open.

The 'experience stations' are a series of interactive tourist information points that provided tourists with a depth of knowledge and sensory experience. These stations are intended to be a taster towards a thesis question and the main design proposal.

A tourist in London, altered perception

The storyboard is a series of 5 altered images following the issues raised by the future tourist image. These images begin to highlight a tourist route around London centred on the Thames, however each image is altered as an expression of the misconception of the camera.

Narrative, vertical exploration

These narrative artefacts are exploring the history and connection of 3 bridges on the tourist trail of the Thames. Each story has been written as if from the perspective of the architect on the opening day/s of each bridge and explore the bridge's history and connection. Each story is connected by the demolition of Peter Cole-Church's London Bridge.

A tourist in London, the future tourist

The cultural issue that I am focusing on during my final year of postgraduate study is the relationship of the tourist in the city. In order to consider this relationship I will be investigating the modern tourist’s lack of a multi sensory experience and the developments in technology particularly in relation to photography. The image is an exaggerated expression of this cultural issue. As a manifestation of the tourist’s bias towards sight, the camera and the rejection of all other sensory experiences.
